Gathering background information
These reference sources provide overviews that can help you explore and refine your topic. They may also suggest other useful materials for your research.

Encyclopedia of American Industries (2 vols.) (REF HC 102 .E53 1994) provides an introduction to the structure, history, and current conditions of American industries. Arranged by Standard Industrial Codes (SIC), which can help you find further information about the industry. SIC codes have been replaced with North American Industry Classification System (NAISC). The NAISC manual and a NAISC/SIC conversion table are available on the web.

Hoover's Manuals are available through Company Financial section of the Business file in Academic (Lexis Nexis). Select Hoover's Company Reports at the "Source" pull down menu. Covers companies listed on the New York and American stock exchanges, giving company histories and detailed descriptions of each company's financial status.

Moody's Manuals (REF HG 4961) Several manuals cover companies listed on the New York and American stock exchanges, giving company histories and detailed descriptions of each company's financial status. Financial profiles and information by industry are also supplied.

Standard and Poor's Corporation Descriptions (REF HG 4501) covers more companies than Moody's but gives briefer histories.

Standard and Poor's Industry Surveys (3 vols.)(REF HC 106.6 S74) provide extensive essays that include historical perspective, current status, and forecasts for U. S. industries. Standard and Poor's web site has many features including articles, news, analysis, and credit ratings. Requires free registration

U.S. Industry and Trade Outlook 2000 (REF HC 106 82 U16 2000) contains essays on 50 major manufacturing, information, professional, scientific, technical, health, and social assistance industries such as construction, electronics, education, entertainment, finance. Essays cover domestic trends, global trends, growth projections, industry performance, environmental issues, international competitiveness. Formerly titled U S Industrial Outlook. Formerly titled U S Industrial Outlook. Will no longer be available in a print format.

Value Line Investment Survey (part of the Value Line Research Center) is one of the most widely used independent investment information services in the world. Its up-to-date issues are a comprehensive reference that has useful information for virtually every investor. In breadth of coverage it is encyclopedic, covering some 1,700 equity issues. Every week, about 135 stocks in seven or eight industries are covered.

Locating articles

Step 1: Use an index to find citations to journal articles on your topic.

The periodical indexes listed below will help you find citations to journal articles and other publications in theatre arts. You may search for articles by subject headings, keywords, or by author. Note that most indexes do NOT include the full-text of articles. Therefore, you'll need to go on to step 2, below, once you have selected some citations.

Useful indexes for diversity management:

Ebsco's Academic Search Elite covers a wide range of academic areas, including design and related fields. It features the full-text for over 1,000 journals. Restrict your search to scholarly journals by selecting the Advanced Search option and limiting your search to Peer-reviewed journals.

ABI Inform Global Indexes and abstracts over 1300 scholarly, trade and popular business journals. Full text articles are available for over 600 journals titles. Coverage: 1971 to present.

ABI Inform Trade and Industry Indexes and abstracts over 700 trade journals covering every major industry, including finance, insurance, transportation, construction, etc. Coverage varies.

Academic (Lexis-Nexis) Full text coverage of 6000 English language sources, including newsletters, magazines, trade journals, wire services, broadcast transcripts (AP, New York Times, CNN), international news sources, business directories, SEC documents, corporate profiles, statutes, federal and state case law, law reviews and state legal materials. Coverage varies.

Business Full Text 3000 international English-language business magazines covering accounting, finance, management and small business. Coverage: 1982-present; updated monthly.

Business Source Elite Provides fulltext for nearly 930 journals covering business, management, economics, finance. Coverage: 1990 - present.

Emerald Full Text Emerald - the Electronic Management Research Library Database - by MCB Press provides access to over 130 journals. Respected journals such as the European Journal of Marketing, International Journal of Operations & Production Management, Personnel Review, The TQM Magazine and Library Management, are included. Coverage: 1989 - present.

Proquest Newspapers Coverage of 556 worldwide newspapers. Includes the 300 full text papers covered in ProQuest Newstand.

Useful indexes for Statistics:

Lexis Nexis Statistical enables easy access to statistics produced by the U.S. government, major international intergovernmental organizations, professional and trade organizations, commercial publishers, independent research organizations, state government agencies, and universities. Coverage: 1973 - present. Fulltext 1998 - present (some back to 1995)

Polling the Nation is an online database of public opinion polls containing the full text of 350,000 questions and responses from 14,000 surveys conducted from 1986 through the present in the U.S. and 80 other countries.
Coverage: 1986 - present.

STAT-USA A service of the U.S. Department of Commerce. State of the Nation provides current and historical economic and financial releases and economic data. Globus Business Opportunities provides current and historical trade-related releases, international market research, trade opportunities and country anaylsis TheNational Trade Data Bank provides access to country commercial guides, market research reports and U.S. import and export statistics.

Use a citation index to extend your search:

If you have already identified a key article or book, you can use a citation index to follow-up. It will allow you to find other publications that have cited that work or its author. Often very useful!

Social Sciences Citation Index To find articles that cite a known author or work, use the Cited Reference search option. Step 2: Now that you have a citation to an article, does the Library own the journal?

First, check the Library Catalog, to see if the Library subscribes to the journal and has the issue you need. Search the catalog by Journal Title. Next, check the UWP Periodicals List for articles that are available full-text, often through databases such as Ebsco's Academic Search.

Searching for web pages

Although you can search the World Wide Web by keyword using a search engine, browsing the Web sites below can help you find more authoritative information in the field of design.

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) provides industry statistics, news, and articles concerning the industry as a whole.

Bookwire provides statistics, news, links to specialized publishers and to authors in the book publishing industry.

BookProZone is a site for authors seeking publishers, but also includes links to industry related web pages, a library of articles, and a directory of publishers.

Bureau of Census This site features a variety of methods to retrieve Census data. News releases and reference publications are also available. CenStats, a subscription service which has all Census publications since January 1996, is here, too.

Human Resource Professional's Gateway to the Internet - Links to Other HR Resources has an annotated list of resources of interest to HR professionals including listservs, government agencies, HR firms, professional organizations and legal web pages. Lengthy list, but worth examination.

Publishers Weekly is a trade magazine for the publishing industry. This web page requires registration and some features are limited to subscribers, but current news articles are free.

Web Resources Evaluation (from Gulf Coast Community College Library) has a table to help students determine criteria to judge web resources.

Citing sources

When preparing a project in art or design, follow the recommendation of your instructor when you cite the sources you have used. Instructors may recommend the format styles described in these publications and Web sites.

The MLA handbook for writers of research papers (Reference Desk LB2369 .G53 2003) provides the recommendations of the Modern Language Association for formatting papers and references.

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Assocation (APA) provides examples of the American Psychological Association (APA) citation style. Consult the most recent edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, located at the Reference Desk (REF DESK BF76.7 P83 2001).
