Chemical Substance Index

The Chemical Substance Index relates chemical substance names to CA abstract numbers. The greatest difficulty in using this index lies in the fact the the Chemical Substance Index employs only the Chemical Abstracts systematic nomenclature for substances.

The systematic subdivision found in the Chemical Substance Index are analogous tothat of the General Subject Index.: the substance names printed in boldface type are subject to the rules of nomenclature, i.e. they are the CA Index names, while the index entries in lightface type originate from the natural language generally used by the authors

Some substance names, under which a large number of abstracts are cited, are divided by heading subdivisions, which are arranged according to two criteria:

The same standard qualifiers as in the General Subject Index are applied:

Note the presence of the CAS Registry numbers (in brackets). These are important and will be discussed in more detail later.

Hint:Occasionally at an index heading, there are entries with no text modification, but only an abstract number. The absence of text modification implies that synthesis of the substance is discussed in the original document.

Hint: The inversion of names is one of the basic principles in forming the CA Index Name as the Chemical Substance Index is arranged alphabetically according to parent compounds. It is VERY IMPORTANT to recognize the parent compound.

Hint: Prior to 1972, or the 9th Collective Index, names of chemical substances appeared in the General Subject Index
