Periodical Indexes

The periodical indexes listed below will help you find citations to journal articles and other publications about current events related to geology. Before beginning, it's important to understand the importance of creating a good search strategy. Prepare a search strategy worksheet to plan your search before searching the indexes.

  • Geobase Includes over 600,000 records with abstracts from journals, books, monographs, conference proceedings, and reports. Subjects include: cartography, hydrology, climatology, meteorology, energy, paleontology, environment, petrology, geochemistry, photogrammetry, geomorphology, sedimentology, geophysics and volcanology. Geobase tutorial from Simon Frasier University; Geobase Slide Show from OCLC.

  • Environmental Issues & Policy Index provides researchers with abstracts and indexing for more than 1,000 titles covering environmental policy and studies. Updated monthly, with ongoing coverage for more than 500 of those titles, the database contains citations for nearly 700,000 articles published since 1973. The database offers deep coverage of applicable areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, environmental law, geography, marine and freshwater resources, public policy, social impacts, urban planning and more. Additionally, an environmental thesaurus and publication index are available for more precise, advanced searching.

  • Ebsco's Academic Search covers a wide range of academic areas, including chemistry and related fields. It features the full-text for over 1,000 journals. Restrict your search to scholarly journals by selecting the Advanced Search option and limiting your search to Peer-reviewed journals.

  • General Science Full Text is an index to English language periodicals in the general sciences, including astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, environment, earth sciences, food and nutrition, medicine, microbiology, oceanography, physics, physiology and zoology.

  • Applied Science and Technology Full Text indexes 400 English language periodicals in the applied sciences and technology. Covers aeronautics, chemistry, computer science, electronics, energy, fire and fire prevention, geology, mathematics, metallurgy, oceanography, physics and plastics.

  • Agricola indexes material acquired by the National Agricultural Library on agricultural economics and engineering, animal science, food science, forestry, home economics, natural resources, plant diseases and insect pests

  • Biological and Agricultural Abstracts contains citations to articles, book reviews, symposia and conference proceedings from over 250 English language periodicals in biology and agriculture. Covers zoology, veterinary medicine, soil science, plant pathology, physiology, nutrition, microbiology, marine biology and limnology, genetics, horticulture, forestry, ecology, etc

Citation Indexes

  • Science Citation Index To find articles that cite a known author or work, use the Cited Reference search option. Because this type of search differs from keyword or subject searching, you may want to review this short tutorial on how to search SCI.

Digital Collections

  • Great Lakes Maritime History Project contains over 7,000 files on ships that sailed since 1679 and some that sail on the Great Lakes today. Vessels included are diesel-powered, sailing ships, barges, cargo vessels, passenger boats, military vessels, and pleasure craft

Web Resources

Browsing the selected Web sites below can help you find authoritative information on the Great Lakes and geology in general.

How to Choose a Search Engine or Directory, prepared by the University at Albany Libraries, provides detailed information on choosing and searching web resources. Be sure to look at the "search tips" page for each search engine as search procedures may vary.

The Great Lakes Information Network provides information spanning environmental quality, resource management, transportation, demographic, and economic development data, information and resources on the Great Lakes region of the U.S. and Canada.

Great Lakes Online (University of Wisconsin Sea Grant)is a rich resource of Great Lakes information. Wisconsin Sea Grant is a statewide program of basic and applied research, education, and outreach and technology transfer dedicated to the stewardship and sustainable use of the nation's Great Lakes and ocean resources.

Historical Collections of the Great Lakes at Bowling Green State University, is collects, preserves, and makes available to scholars, students, and the public, historical materials documenting the Great Lakes region and connecting waterways

Great Lakes Water Institute (UWM) The mission of the Great Lakes Water Institute is to provide the State of Wisconsin a focal point for research, education and outreach aimed at a thorough understanding of the Great Lakes and other aquatic and environmental resources of local, state, national and international importance.

NOAA CoastWatch Great Lakes Node obtains, produces, and delivers environmental data and products for near real-time monitoring of the Great Lakes to support environmental science, decision making, and supporting research . This is achieved by providing access to near real-time and retrospective satellite observations and in-situ Great Lakes data to Federal, state, and local agencies, academic institutions, and the public. The goals and objectives of the Great Lakes CoastWatch Program directly support agency statutory responsibilities in estuarine and marine science, living marine resource protection, and ecosystem monitoring and management.

Great Lakes Data Rescue Project is actively engaged in a program to Rescue Great Lakes seismic reflection, bathymetric, and sediment-sample data and place them in established marine geological and geophysical data repositories at the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC).

Geosource is listing of web resources for human geography, physical geography, planning, geoscience and environmental science. Sections include academic subjects, countries and regions, library collections and museums, international organizations, university departments and research establishments, statistical agencies and resources, publishers and reference.

The Geological Society of America is the the professional association for geologists. Information for members about meetings, publications, and issues of critical interest to research and education. Also has items of public interest relating to earth science and public policy and government affairs.

NOTE: Although there is a wealth of information on the web, not all of it is authoritative. Check Five criteria for evaluating Web pages to check your sources.

Citing Your Sources

When preparing a project in geology, follow the recommendation of your instructor when you cite the sources you have used. Instructors may recommend one of the format styles described in these publications and Web sites..

The ACS style guide : a manual for authors and editors (Reference Desk Collection QD8.5 .A25 1997) presents the ACS style.

ACS Books Reference Style Guidelines is a brief guide to citing the most common types of materials.

The MLA handbook for writers of research papers (Reference Desk LB2369 .G53 1999) provides the recommendations of the Modern Language Association for formatting papers and references.

How to Cite References Using MLA Style This online guide, prepared by this library, is also available in paper format in the guide rack near the Reference Desk.

A manual for writers of term papers, theses, and dissertations (Reference Desk LB2369 .T8 1996) presents the Chicago (also known as Turabian) style for formatting papers and references.

Documentation: Chicago Style, created by the UW-Madison Writing Center, presents the basics of using the Chicago or Turabian style.
