Hill Order
Molecular formulas MUST
appear in Hill Order. This means:
- For carbon containing
compounds:
- C is placed
first
- H (if present)
follows
- remaining symbols
in alphabetical order
- For compounds not containing
carbon:
- all symbols are in
alphabetical order.
Hint: If you cannot
find your substance make sure it's in Hill Order. Think about the formula for
sodium chloride - NaCl. In Hill Order, it becomes ClNa - not they way one is
used to seeing it.
