PSY 421 Advanced Social Psychology:
The Self in a
Social Context
Course content and objectives
“Advanced Social Psychology: The Self in a Social
Context” is a course for students who wish to gain a
more in-depth understanding of social psychological
research and theories on the self. In addition it is a
course for students who wish to learn how to critically
evaluate research. Furthermore, I will introduce you to the
art of designing scientific research in psychology. Yes,
that means that you will have to come up with your own
ideas regarding how to test a particular hypothesis in
Social Psychology.
Thus, this course is for students who are interested
in the subject matter but it also serves the important
function of preparing students for the kind of work
required in graduate school or any employment setting that
emphasizes critical thinking skills.
Please note that this is a
seminar,
not a lecture. The prerequisites for this course are Social
Psychology (220) and Research Methods (300). You are
expected to know the basics of research design, how to use
PsycInfo, and how to write APA-style papers.
