21st Century Prep Project
Project Steps
Fall 2007

 Steps that will be involved:

1)    Decide on the training team.  Some thought should be given to compatibility of schedules and complementary skills. However, teams generally form around an interest in or willingness to work on a particular topic.  While some of you may get the willies just thinking about the prospect of working in teams, I have no intention of turning you lose to sink or swim.  To help you make your group experience more pleasant and productive, I have provided you with recommendations from experts for facilitating smoother group functioning on the course web site.  And each team will be required to prepare and abide by a team contract (3% of grade) (form available on course web site). Due October 1.

2)    Prepare/conduct a needs assessment (6% of grade).  This means of identifying the parameters for workshop content will generally be accomplished through interviews and focus groups. Due September 26 when client interviews are conducted.  (You should arrive for the visit with 2 copies of a prepared list of questions – a copy for you to keep, a copy to give to the instructor.)

3)    Develop a list of objectives or outcomes for your module (6% of grade).  Based on the needs analysis, you will decide and delineate what participants will be able to do new and/or differently after attending your workshop.  These objectives should drive all other decisions relative to your workshop, so this step is key! Due October 8.

4)    Based on the results of the needs assessment, design your training module so as to meet your objectives.  You should make every effort to incorporate principles of learning, which we will have reviewed in class in some detail.  Teams are expected to consult with the client as needed as they develop their plans, in order to create a mutually satisfactory final product.  Final “Lesson Plan” and “Instructor Preparation & Planning Checklist” due one week prior to presentation.

5)    Meet with professor (2% of grade). Earlier, more frequent contact is encouraged.  However, the entire team must meet with the professor (at the absolute latest) 2 weeks prior to delivery of the workshop for a quality check.  Generally a representative of 21st Century Prep will also be present for this meeting, and teams should come with drafts of their lesson plan and the preparation & planning checklist.

6)    Based on the design of your training module, develop the evaluation for your training (6% of grade) to be completed by module participants.  Due October 24.

7)    Conduct the training session (15% of grade).  This may include features like experiential exercises, videos, participatory cases, role-plays, lecture and/or class discussion.  If you are using software, make sure it is compatible with the available computer system.  Be sure to plan ahead if you need any special audio-visual equipment, like camcorders – for doing homemade videos – easels, and paper.

8)    Gather evaluation information from participants. Feedback from participants will constitute 3% of your grade on this dimension.  The remaining 12% will be based on the observation/evaluation by the course instructor and client staff members attending the session.  After the workshop, plan to give participant evaluations to your instructor before leaving the building.

9)    The final 7% of your grade associated with this project will come peer evaluations by group members.  Each student will evaluate their own contributions, as well as those of other team members.  Students will be graded on their grading, meaning that you had better have a very good reason for giving yourself and each of your group members perfect scores. Final evaluations due one week after workshop presentation.
