James Crowley • Composer
Born and raised in Chicago, Crowley earned his BM in Composition from the University of Illinois, and upon graduation was named to the Bronze Tablet - the University's highest academic honor. He completed the MM and DM in Composition at Northwestern University and is currently Associate Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. His recent work From The Earth is a prize winner in the Ravinia Music Festival’s first composition competition, and will be toured on an east coast tour and throughout the state of Illinois in March/April 2009. His music has been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, the Eastman Wind Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, the Interlochen Academy Symphonic Band, the Millar Brass Ensemble, Arizona New Music Ensemble, and many other ensembles. His works have also been presented at Indiana University, Queens College, Cleveland State University, University of Illinois, University of Texas-Austin, Ithaca College, University of Louisville, Bowling Green State University, East Carolina University, University of Hawai'i, Sam Houston State University, Valdosta State University, Truman State University, California State University-Fullerton, Florida International University, New Music Chicago Spring Festival, Pine Mountain Music Festival, Korea Collaborative Pianists Assocation-Seoul, Akademie der Künste-Berlin, and in Cape Town, South Africa. He has received commissions and awards from the Music Teachers National Association, National String Teachers Association, American Music Center, and Meet-The-Composer. His guitar solo Scordatura was spotlighted in the December 2007 issue of Soundboard magazine, and his violin/piano duet Danse Lunaire is featured by European-American Music in the SCI Journal of Music Scores. From 1987-1990 he was a member of the administrative staff of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. In 1991 he held a Teaching Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival, and he previously taught at Drury University (1994-98). He is married to the pianist Eun-Joo Kwak, and they live in Milwaukee with their daughter Annabelle.
James Crowley (b. 1963) is an award winning composer of contemporary classical music, whose works have been performed throughout the USA, and in Europe, Asia, and Africa. He is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
