File Extension and Icon Images

The computer uses file extensions to choose icon images.
Note here we have a PowerPoint (.ppt), Netscape (.htm) and Word (.doc) image displayed on the icons
If the file extension does not match any application known to your operating system software, a generic image is used for the icon.

Web Graphic File Basics: gif and jpeg formats

Gif's are limited to 256 colors but can be saved multiple times w/o any loss of quality.  Jpeg's can have millions of colors and can be compress to small files sizes.  However, do not use a jpg format if you will be saving the file multiple times due to the loss in quality with each save.  Png's are fairly new and may not work on many browsers yet have the positive attributes of both gifs and jpegs.

Using the View-Details Option to Determine File Size

In the C:\ window,  choosing the Details setting on the View pull down menu shows file name, file size, and file type.  Knowing the file size can help you determine the download time.  Try to keep you graphic file size below 10 KB, especially if there are multiple images in your html file. Saving an image using jpeg file compression can help.

Search for Free Graphics on the Net

Use the Internet to search for free public domain background or button images.

I search using Starting Point's Metacrawler.  To do this:
1- Type in the following keywords in the
    Search Other Resources window:
    public domain background graphics
    and click Search.

2- Choose Metacrawler to see the result of all search engines listed.

3- At the top of the page it will give you the
option to repeat the search treating the
keywords as a phrase.  This can often
    eliminate a lot of chaff.

4- It also provides information
    on the number of hits

The number one rated hit (i.e. top of the list) for this search was Public Domain Pictures .

Alternative Method for Creating Folders

If saving to a Zip disk substitute D: for A: in the text below.

1- Left click on Start
2- Choose Explore
3 - Use the scroll bar to go to the top of the Folder window and single click on (A:)

4- From the Menu choose File, New,
                                              Folder

5- Name the folder "~username"
6- Double click on the ~username folder
7- Repeat Step 4
8- Name the folder "images"

How to preview a background image file

You may often want to look at image files before you insert them into a document.  Microsoft Photo Editor has a preview function that allows one to look at the image without even opening the file.  I recommend you do this with the numerous background files made available to you.  Here's how:

1- Minimize FrontPage by clicking  here
2- To open Microsoft PhotoEditor click on the icon
3- Click the Open file icon.  The dialog box
    shown at right  will appear.

4 - Change the directory to F:/Usr/Robinson/Backgrounds/filename.gif
5- Highlight a file of interest by clicking on it once.
6- Now click on the button.  View the image and decide if you would want it for a background.  If not click cancel and repeat the process.

7- Once you find one you like write down the filename for later reference.

This process allow one to view many files quickly but to see how the file looks wallpapered as our background we must insert it into FrontPage.

Hints and Resources

When highlighting text with the mouse always start from the left edge and move to the right.  Otherwise the entire document tends to become highlighted.

If from the Edit Pull down menu you find that Copy is not an option, try Control-C to copy (Control-V will Paste).

The UW-P Graphic Standards and Style Guide will provide you with information specifically oriented to the Parkside webpages.

A very handy software which will enable you to capture any portion of the screen and save it as a graphic file is SnagIt.  Visit http://www.techsmith.com/ to find out more or to download a trial copy.
