Your Work on the Internet: Uploading Facts
Web pages are transferred from local
memory, the C: drive to a remote memory
location - a computer called a web server. This is done using a
process called FTP for File Transfer Protocol and the process is called uploading. FrontPage
refers to it with the word "Publish". It
is simply a way to copy and paste your webpage
files from the C-drive to the web server.
Where Will I Be Sending My
HTML Files?
The graphic below portrays the structure of Parkside's website.
Storage space is provided through a connection with the
machine that provides email service to the campus (email.uwp.edu or uwp.edu
for short).
It has a public_html folder for personal web pages. Everyone who
has an email account is provided with this web page storage space.
Files and folders uploaded to the public_html folder have an Internet address of the
form:
http://uwp.edu/~email_username/website_folder_name.
Note that the public_html folder name is not visible in
the web address. It has been replaced by ~email_username.

The UW-P Web
Server Directory Structure
If you look at the URL or web address in the Netscape
Location box you see the following directory structure
displayed:
.
|

Desktop machine |
We will now create a mirror
image of folder structure on the UW-P web server that matches the files on
the C-drive of our computer.

Web server's folders. |
How to Publish Your Website
| 1- From the File pull-down menu choose
Publish Web |
 |
| 2- In the space provided enter the file
path shown at right and click OK. |
 |
3- In the Name field enter your UW-
Parkside e-mail username.
(e.g. smith001)
In the Password field enter your UW-
Parkside e-mail password.
Click OK. |
 |
| 4- Since no soca_354 folder exist on
the server it prompts you to see if you want it to create the folder
for you. Click OK. |
|

|
The folder is created and the Publish Web
Window appears.
At present it only shows the files on your
C-drive, not the file list of the files on the server
5- Click the
Show button to see the entire window
|
 |
| Notice the server still has no files as
we have not clicked the Publish button yet. The green checkmarks
signify files to be uploaded. |
|

| We do not want to upload all files in
our folder. We do not want
a_fable.doc to be copied and pasted to the server.
6- To keep from uploading a file right click on it and
choose Don't Publish from the menu.
Note the red x indicating it will not be uploaded.
|

 |
7- Click the Publish button.
A bar graph fills out as the
upload process proceeds.
|
 |
| 8- Once the process is completed you
have the option of viewing a list of all the files that were
transferred by clicking the link in the graphic at right. Try it - it
is an active link. |
 |
| 9- Click Done to complete the process. |
 |
10- Open Netscape or
Internet Explorer and type in your address of the form:
http://uwp.edu/~username/soca_354
How does it look? Any graphics missing? Is all the
formatting the same?
Publishing
After the First Time
You will make revisions to the pages you
just uploaded. For future uploads you need not
upload the entire folder. FrontPage will automatically detect individual
webpage files that have been modified,
designate them with the green
checkmark, and only publish those files. The program will also
automatically upload any embedded graphic files that have been added to
the webpage.
Note:
It is possible that when you upload
after the first time you might see a window |
like the one at right.
It is telling you that there is already a file online that doesn't
exactly match the one your trying to upload and asking you what to do.
Only if all the information is correct |
 |
| should you click Yes (not Yes to All).
If it continues to appear for all your files you are probably trying
to publish to the wrong location on the server - check the filepath in
the Publish Web window to confirm it is correct. |
Viewing Updates in a Web Browser
After
uploading you should check the changes by looking at your website in a
web browser. When publishing changes to a webpage you may need to:
in
Netscape 4.x click the
button
and for Netscape 7.x click

in
Internet Explorer click the
button
in order to see the changes online.
How to
Delete Unwanted Files on the Server
When one connects to the network during the
Publish Web process the window is divided into two halves. The left side
represents the files on your C: drive and the right side represents
files on the web server.

| To delete a file from the server,
single click over the file on the server window and click the delete
button. |
 |
| You will be prompted to confirm the
deletion. If the files listed are correct, click Yes. |
 |
That's it.
