On Recognizing Structural Violence

On Tuesday, January 30, 2001, Carla Shaw wrote:

I truly enjoyed your lecture today in your Modern Social Theories class. I was enlightened by the idea of "Structural Violence." I never thought about how many institutions in our world commit structural violence against us. Or as you say, it is not directed at us as individuals, but it still does us harm. I was thinking about doing my Thesis on how society has put us in such a hurry and has taken our time away by increasing our work weeks and work hours, that we have no time to do the small things like cook for our families. Because of this, they have built fast food restaurants on every corner with drive-thru service because they know that we are too tired to get out of our cars to sit down to eat and because of this, our families are having higher occurances of diabetes and heart desease. This is " Structural Violence".

Good explanation of structural violence, Carla. And thank you for starting off the academic discourse on that term this semester.
