These short statements of my perception of your learning are what grew from my review of all the records and our experiences in class. In a cooperative learning world, in which our objective is to help each other gain critical insights, what should matter, instead of "grades" is such a report. Learning that I can tell you I have seen, either directly or through some of your work, and that you can confirms. That is learning accountability.
As we gain skill at this, a paragraph of recommendation should be your goal for the end of each course, each semester. If you were to realize that this is how I will end the course, and you were to want the best possible recommendation of your learning, we could interactively check our respective records all semester, and the recommendations could be detailed and helpful to all who want to know about your learning.
Visit Letters of Recommendation for clues on how to do this.
It was a pleasure teaching you. I hope that some of you will visit me, or e-mail me and begin to let me know how these recommendations could better reflect your learning. I apologize that there is no order to the numbers; that is because you were listed alphabetically on my roll sheet. jeanne

You write well. Your responses to the exercises were clear and precise. Your work came in early and consistently over the semester. Then something happened, and I lost trace of you. Please get in touch so your work can be completed.

For you I wish there were an A+. Your work came in consistently throughout the semester, beginning early in February. You worked almost always with a strong group, and often served as leader to the others. You shared your learning with peers both in the lab and over the phone. You worked at your exercises until you had a strong sense of how to handle SPSS. I hope this knowledge and experience will serve you well in the future.

Good and relatively steady work throughout the early part of the semester, including some group work. But towards the end of the semester there are many exercises missing. Some of those missing pieces must be filled in.

Reported grade: B
Good attendance and reasonable coverage of exercises. Some group work and some work which seems to indicate helping others. Evidence of ability to interact by e-mail, but very little evidence of going beyond the basic required exercises for the course.

Reported grade: A
Strong group from the very early part of the semester. One of the groups that showed flexibility in working with others. I regretted that very little of the interaction carried over into the class, largely because we covered so much this semester. Most of the exercises were completed, lecture notes sent for and e-mailed to the group, and each of you seemed to take turns sending the e-mail. Good work.

Excellent work. Strong work with groups, consistently since February. Good interpretation exercise with request received for lecture notes. Contributions sent for posting to Dear Habermas and exercises set up for benefit of other students.
9562
Good group work. Shifting patterns, indicative of work with several groups. Exercises completed consistently over the semester. Sometimes acted to send the e-mail for the group.
9780
Started out very strong and consistently in February with well worded interpretations from exercises. Worked individually throughout the semester.
7015
Worked consistently throughout the semester with another student. They shared work at the computer, took the time to be certain that they demonstrated their knowledge of Internet usage and of the SPSS program. Consistently checked both by e-mail and in person to see that they were on top of the work. Well done.
6612
Required work missing, though I am grateful that you stayed in touch all semester.
8604
Worked consistently over the semester with a very strong group. Well worded responses.
1006
Consistent work with very strong partner over the whole semester. Stayed regularly in touch and has contributed to Dear Habermas. Good student with intense motivation.
3808
Consistent and very good work. Despite scheduling difficulties which made group work difficult, this student managed to share work through an e-mail group. Beautifully done.

Wonderful work. Student with lively intelligence, little patience with lab equipment, no patience with instructor, creatively structured study groups with many students, and shared computer experience. Where past impatience had led to student covering too much, too fast, with resultant lacunae, this semester clearly showed an academic maturity in student's willingness to master the SPSS program, and discover the lacunae. The help offered to all of us was greatly appreciated. Student leaves this class with respect for thoroughness in learning and for tremendous help with hardware and software problems, as well as the traditional statistical problems.

Worked with strong group throughout the semester, with multiple submissions. Minimal interaction directly with the instructor, and no direct discourse, which adds to the difficulty of writing this recommendation.
Well, interaction improves post-class. Sent me a poem:
SLOW DANCE
"You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast
Time is short
The music won't last"
from an e-mail going around attached to the hoax e-mail about the six-year-old girl and cancer. I'll keep the poem around to remind me. Now, stay in touch, OK?
3820
Required work to complete. Considerable discourse over the early work that had been turned in, but almost nothing on the now very late work that must be turned in.
2932
Good work in early exercises; individual submissions supplemented by group submissions. Checked in early on computer literacy. Clear that student has command of computer e-mail, but no discourse or evidence given of computer command of SPSS program to verify that skill. Some credit given for consistent attendance, but did not take up instructor-offered chance to broach the issue of SPSS command.
2363
Solid work with good groups. Impressive work in lab. Developed strong computer literacy during course of the semester, and relied on peer sharing to learn both hardware and software. Similar effort made with actual SPSS program. Developed enough group consciousness that group members were urging higher grade when instructor was insisting that she wanted further demonstration of cross tabs and recoding after student's return from conference. Group's effort played important role. Good demonstration of learning for all.
1680
Good evidence of computer literacy already in March. Some extra web exercises in March. Worked alone. Some good work on exercises, but some missing from record.
3306
Strong work with group. Consistent work over semester. Many good responses in own words. Worked in group with a student who needed to do some work by distance because of job constraints. Several resubmissions to be sure I had all her work. Stayed in contact.
5845
Strong group. Submissions began in February. Resubmisssions, careful checking to be sure I got the work when e-mail system was down. Group exercises well written. Missing mostly was direct discourse with the teacher to make the teacher aware of learning as it progressed.
5097
Individual exercises, including extra web exercises, begun in February. Some resubmission when e-mail system down, showing care to inform teacher of learning. Sent in interpretative work and record of request for lecture notes. Good interaction.
4318
Intensely motivated. Disciplined questioning. Work with at least two very strong groups. Helped others with both hardware and software as they were mastered. Took intelligent advantage of the freedom to work independently without sacrificing the thoroughness of work. I was particularly impressed when both of these groups relayed questions and answers back and forth, without demanding that each member be present face to face in all meetings. Also some impressive reasoning.
0298
Stayed in contact; submitting work more slowly because of job constraints.
9019
Strong group, frequent resubmissions to guarantee my access to work. Good written responses. Work done consistently across semester. Direct discourse with instructor to assure awareness of learning. A few exercises missing. Would appreciate resubmission to complete records.
8832
Evidence of computer literacy provided early, as individual. Early exercises well done, sent in as early as February, and consistently thereafter. Final exercise on interpretation submitted with request for lecture notes, showing ease of interactive work with computer. Two recoding exercises missing. Please resubmit to complete records.
1665
Good and consistent submission of exercise with group since February. Personal perception was that group provided major support for study. Recoding exercises not recorded. Please resubmit for record completion.
7663
Splendid work. Student who began course with some computer sophistication shared that information throughout the semester with other students, helping them with both hardware and software, generously sharing time and class materials. Formed part of strong group, and often aided others in course lab time. Consistent coverage of exercises from early start in semester.
3932
Submissions not recorded because of equipment difficulties. Exercises have been done, but, I believe, individually, with no group work. No work in record beyond required exercises. Have requested resubmission of exercises and any other material that was not available at grading time to complete record and re-assess grade. Have duly noticed that student offered to do this on May 24. My apologies. I was very sick at the time, and did not foresee that I would, in fact, need them. Nor did I foresee how long this process would take.
6120
No record of measurement of learning.
2284
Strong group work. Consistent good writing on group exercises, beginning in March. Recoding exercises missing. Please resubmit to complete records.
8689
Worked individually, but shared considerably in lab. Good and consistent work on exercises since February, throughout semester. Careful to be sure instructor knew of work, especially when a crisis caused some absences.
2821
Wiithdrawal approved on June 3 by instructor by e-mail to Dean's office. But registrar has no official record. Will be changed to a W if paper work can be found.
1755
Excellent work on "lateness" study. Strong group with submissions dating from February, and resubmissions when system broke down. Excellent final project, with editing for placement on site. Careful checking to be sure that work was good.
6839
Consistent word from February throughout semester with strong group. Careful checking to be sure instructor was aware of work.
4135
Worked in a team throughout the semester, consistently, with requested feedback from instructor, starting in February. Shared with other students. Good answers. Some exercises not reflected on record because students worked with me in office.

6211
Tested out of course from previous training.
9989
Beautifully done work. Did not have criminal justice book, yet managed to adapt our work to the different Babbie and Halley. Worked individually because of time constraints, but shared frequently and effectively during class times, managing to work with more than one group.
2216
Worked consistently with one group, intermittently with another, and shared continuously questions as well as answers. Considerable evidence, especially during face to face meetings of willingness to pursue the knowledge in depth. Evident motivation to understand. Good job.
4455
Good and consistent work. Strong group. Contribution to discussions, and evidence of carrying over the theoretical and methodological concerns to the real world of praxis.
6101
Early continuous submissions. Hiatus when schedule produced conflict. Caught up near end; rejoined group. Should resubmit missing exercises to complete record.
9036
Good and consistent work dating from February. Many resubmissions during periods when e-mail system down. Strong motivation in class, and asked good questions.
6704
Consistent submissions, strong work. Some exercises missing towards end of semester because of special circumstances. Student stayed in touch with group, and stayed in touch with me to assure me that learning continued despite the problems. Good work. May want to resubmit the later exercises sometime to complete record. I was impressed by the group's integrity in reporting the student's inability to be physically present with the group, and for recognizing the dilemma, and finding solutions for it.
3437
Your group work was good. And you sent in exercises consistently over the semester, including the last one, and requested the lecture notes. Good job.
0800
Consistent and good submissions from early February. Extra work submitted. Special efforts made to make up for time unavoidably lost. Worked individually because of special constraints. Loss to class.
